West Allis police are searching for two thieves who stole $6,000 to $8,000 worth of hemp buds from Laughing Grass Hemp, a cannabidiol (CBD) dispensary at 1412 S. 72nd St., West Allis.
A break in occurred at about 11 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at the shop. Video surveillance from the store shows two thieves breaking through the front door glass and grabbing three jars of hemp buds from the display case after checking the register.
The whole ordeal lasted about 30 seconds. West Allis Police officers responded to the scene about 15 minutes later.
The West Allis Police Department said the investigation is still open and under investigation.
Both of the shop’s owners were in Florida at the time.
One of the thieves dropped a large amount of hemp buds on the street after they exited the building.
One jar holds about two pounds of hemp buds, according to Laughing Grass owner Matthew Wetzel. The retail value of two pounds of that product is about $4,000.
Wetzel said they were unsure of how full the jars were at the time.
The store also had to replace its door and hire a security guard because of the incident.
“For a small business like us, it really hurts,” said Wetzel.
